In my use of a limited number of shapes and colors I am referring to traditional Minimalism, but with asymmetric placement of these
elements and the inclusion of recognizable, symbolic imagery, I am trying to update Minimalism with energy and humor. Some of my
works are in the format of the traditional painting on canvas; some are created with the familiar "single-image" and others are in the
format I refer to as "the two idea", whereby the artwork is made up of two distinct elements. I'm interested in creating visual
relationships between these elements and with the concept of relationships in general. I'm also interested in the concept of "the
container". In 1993 I started a series of mixed-media works with paper using clear plastic baggies as an alternative to traditional
framing. Sometimes the handmade portions of these works are sealed inside the baggies, and other times they're not.
I refer to my works on paper as "pages". Some pages are crumpled up several times, and then flattened and glued to other sheets of
prepared paper, some are charcoal or pencil drawings, some are finger-painted with gesso, and then with black, alkyd paint, some
include collage. I also formulate wall installations comprised of examples of several of these styles.
